For smart cities, one of the most important aspects is the optimization of the traffic flow. For that, smart infrastructure sensors are required which can measure the traffic flow. smartmicro sensors can do this very precisely and provide real-time object data which are (1) fed into local intersection controllers for direct local adaptive traffic control. (2) The traffic data are transmitted to a traffic operation center (TOC)
and allow an optimum traffic flow in a certain region or quarter or on a longer arterial, where the traffic flow is remotely (but automatically) controlled from that TOC. (3) Real-time object data can now also be directly transmitted over a Car2X wireless transmission from an intersection to connected vehicles. This avoids accidents and protects vulnerable road users (VRUs) such as pedestrians and bicycle riders.

The city of Auckland, New Zealand, installed a system combining smartmicro's Multi Lane Traffic Radars, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi in order to smoothen the traffic flow from the city center to the airport. The system already proved its worth as delays were decerased by 50% during peak traffic. ITS International magazine featured an article about the whole system and how it improved the passenger's journey in their March/April 2018 issue.

The Dutch cities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam have recently implemented a system to optimize traffic flow and safety. A coordinated traffic management system consisting of smartmicro radar sensors and ARS T&TT’s Roadside System reliably and accurately detects real traffic situations like the intensity, queues and speed. The state-of-the-art control strategy using radar sensors is not only cost-efficient, especially on long stretches of roads, it can also lead to a reduction of vehicle hours by up to 20%.

smartmicro introduces a brand-new system combining traffic management radar and V2X communication. In the future a mix of connected- (using V2X) and traditional vehicles will share the roads. Connected vehicles will communicate among each other and broadcast important information, improving the traffic.
smartmicro now introduces a solution that generates V2X messages to be received by connected vehicles based on real-time data acquired by fixed infrastructure traffic management radar sensors. Lane specific data, provided by smartmicro's 3D/UHD traffic management radar, are converted into appropriate coordinates (WGS84 standard), speed, heading etc. for all object classes (including pedestrians and heavy trucks). The system then broadcasts the corresponding V2X messages (in this case, to be more precise, Infrastructure-2-Vehicle, I2V messages).
This solution covers up to 8 lanes and features a detection range of up to 300 meters. At a typical fully equipped intersection, connected vehicles using the received V2X messages can ”see” around the corner into other legs of the intersection, and can pick up vulnerable road users (such as bicyclist and pedestrians), before they could even be detected by on-board sensors.
As V2X communication is rated as one of the key drivers for connected, autonomously driving cars, this system supports all V2X equipped vehicles where even non-connected vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians are covered.
